Understanding How Your Dental Insurance Benefits Work

Don’t let your dental benefits go to waste. Every year, people lose hundreds of dollars by letting their dental benefits expire. If you have dental insurance, you might be throwing away money if you let the year end without seeing the dentist, especially if you have outstanding treatment. Here are some very good reasons why it might be a smart idea to pick up the phone and make a dental appointment ASAP:

You haven’t used up your yearly maximum. With most dental insurance plans, there is a maximum amount of coverage that you can get every year. Yearly maximums are usually around $1,000 to $1,500, and every year, they reset. Sadly, any leftover amount is not rolled over into the next year. For example, if you have a maximum of $1,000 but only use $700 of it, you will be saying goodbye to $300 worth of dental care! Call your insurance carrier to find out if you have reached your yearly maximum.

You don’t want to waste your deductible: Every dental plan has a deductible, which is the amount of money you have to spend out of your own pocket before your dental insurance will cover anything. Deductibles are usually anywhere between $25 and $100. Just like yearly maximums, deductibles reset every year. If you wait until 2016 to seek dental care, you’ll have to pay that deductible all over again before you can get any coverage at all.

You pay for it, so use it! Most dental insurance cover 80% or more of the cost of certain basic dental services, including checkups, cleanings, and X-Rays. This is because these types of dental services can save people (and insurance providers) lots of time and money down the road. With regular exams and cleanings, you can stop cavities before they start, and catch small problems before they get big.

Book early before the end of the year to reserve time for your needs.
